Traditional artists & culture bearers receive $5,000.
Apprentices receive $500.

Annual Award for Traditional Artists and Culture Bearers in Arizona

Nominations are being accepted for the Southwest Folklife Alliance (SFA) Master-Apprentice Awardees.  Artist nominations are open for traditional artists living in Arizona to pass on art, culture, and heritage practices to apprentice learners through the annual SFA Master-Apprentice Award. The award is made possible in part by the National Endowment for the Arts and Arizona Commission on the Arts (This award is contingent on federal funding from the National Endowment for the Arts and may be subject to changes or adjustments based on federal funding priorities).

Artists can be nominated by peers, cultural institutions, apprentices, or through self-nomination. They are selected by a panel based on their knowledge, dedication, and commitment to passing on living traditions from our region and beyond. Applicants may come from a wide range of disciplines, including but not limited to:

• Handcrafts: weavers, basket makers, jewelers, mask makers, textile artists, and ritual object makers.
• Occupational Folklife: adobe makers, leather workers, ironworkers, foodways specialists.
• Oral Traditions: storytellers, poets.
• Performing Arts: dancers, vocalists, musicians

The deadline for 2025 nominations is March 31, 2025.

The Southwest Folklife Alliance (SFA) is an affiliate non-profit organization of the University of Arizona, housed within the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences. The Jim Griffith Chair in Public Folklore at the Southwest Center and UA School of Anthropology serves as lead curator for SFA programs and activities.

SFA is the Arizona Commission for the Arts‘ designated State Partner for Folk Arts for the National Endowment for the Arts. We also work in partnership with traditional and folklife communities throughout the state.
